You remember\u2026<\/p>\n

Walking down the street in Paris, early morning, passing a bakery and being enveloped by the light, buttery aroma of warm croissants wafting through the doorway. Turning, entering, eyeing the slightly steaming trays of fresh baked delicacies as they are being placed into the display cases; one caught your eye.<\/p>\n

Pain au Chocolat!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Must\u2026have\u2026<\/p>\n

Standing in the brisk morning, leaning against the stone fa\u00e7ade of the bakery, lifting this fluffy, flaky, melted chocolate-filled treasure to the lips, inhaling the sweet, lush, steamy aroma and then biting off that first morsel\u2026 Powdered sugar coated your lips as warm, viscous liquid chocolate flows onto your tongue; the entire experience was heavenly, and you said to your companion, \u201cmmmm, this content is delicious!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cContent\u201d?<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

Content.<\/p>\n

This morning I received this email:<\/p>\n

Hi, my name is <redacted>\u00a0and I am a content-manager. If you are interested I would love to write a post for your website that I think your audience would really love.<\/i><\/p>\n

I have a list of content titles I can send you and if you like any of them I will write a blog-post of about 500-1000 words including images and video.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i>The more high quality and relevant links we get the more Google loves us right?<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i>Please let me know if you like this post idea or if you would like me to write about something else and I can get started right away.<\/i><\/p>\n

A \u201cContent Manager\u201d?<\/p>\n

What does that even mean?<\/p>\n

As though one can simply put a dollar into the slot marked \u201cCats & Dogs,\u201d \u201cSummer\u2019s Over,\u201d \u201cUnderage Drinking\u201d or \u201cManaging Creativity\u201d and out will come Content That One\u2019s Audience Will Really Love.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s roll this one back and stop calling Art \u201cContent.\u201d It\u2019s demeaning; it lacks dignity.<\/p>\n

This one\u2019s been on my mind for awhile.<\/p>\n

Do we say, \u201cwow, that video content was excellent!\u201d?<\/p>\n

Does a writer of story say s\/he \u201ccreates content\u201d? (And if s\/he does, how does that affect self-image and billing rates?)<\/p>\n

Calling creative work \u201ccontent\u201d flattens it, implies that it\u2019s interchangeable, existing simply to fill a box and that it\u2019s the box that has value when fundamentally it is what\u2019s in that \u201cbox\u201d that offers value.<\/p>\n

Throwing writers, storytellers, architects, filmmakers, lighting designers, set designers, producers, actors and all the other professionals who collaborate to create something meaningful together into this ambiguous catchall basket of \u201ccontent creators\u201d seems to me to be dismissive. Commodifying. Thoughtless.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot goes into that to which Some Business Sorts refer as \u201ccontent\u201d – similar to sales people referring to \u201cunits\u201d whether they\u2019re speaking of automobiles, tickets, desk sets or fur coats\u2026\u201dunits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Especially in our own industry; let\u2019s refer to one another as the hard-working, sleep-deprived, creative artists, artisans, craftspeople and technicians we are.<\/p>\n

You are a filmmaker, an editor, an experience designer, a creative director, a producer, a costume designer, a set designer, a choreographer, a storyteller of myriad possibilities. Neither accept nor be guilty of tossing off and applying labels such as \u201ccontent\u201d or \u201ccontent creator\u201d unless you\u2019re talking about corn flakes\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and I\u2019ll bet the people who make the corn flakes don\u2019t refer to themselves as \u201ccontent creators\u201d either.<\/p>\n

Words are important. Let us use them wisely and well to communicate, enlighten, honor, respect.<\/p>\n

IMHO.<\/p>\n
